The year 1843 was a very eventful one in the Colony's history, not only by its being the first of its charter, and seeing as its visitors the greatest of Chinese functioaries, but because during it there was a period of sickness and nor- tality such as we hope the island nay never see again.

The troops were the first to feel the effects of tae epidemic, and Committees were appointed to investigate the causes, waion medical men decided came from rank vegetation in the vicinity of the barracks, espaciallytuose at West Point, which it was determined to vacate + ke announced in the following proclam-

General Order by His Excellency the Governor AC, The barracks at West Point being about to be vacated by the Wine of Her 's 55th Regiment now stationed taere in order that the ground in the neighbourhɔnd may belevelled and drained, agreeable to the recommendation of the medical Committees walon nave lately assembled to enquire into tãe cause of the prevailing sickness at that location--His Ex- cellency the Governor is pleased to direct that the barracks suɛll be placed in charge of Captain sdwards, Quartermaster General, anu that, as a temporary measure, establishment of saven Chinese Patchwop stali be maintained
